Visit Murano Isle and its Artworks of Glass with the glass factory Mazzega srl

The legend says that in 77 A.D. a few Phoenician merchants, stranded on the Mediterranean coast, in order to light a fire used some of the blocks of "Natron" (soda) stocked in the ship. These blocks, due to the heat, melted together with the sand of the beach changing into streams of a transparent, yet solid material.

Apart this old legend we know that already in 450, in the Venetian lagoon and in the surroundings there were glass-workers that produced the tesseras for the mosaics of the local churches.

The development of Venetian glass factories was quick: in 1271 a first “Code” was introduced to regulate the art of glass producing. The importation of foreign glass into Venice was strictly forbidden and foreign glass makers were prevented from working in the lagoon. The Guild of glass makers was under the authority and protection of the Serenissima Republic, and their formulas were highly valued and kept strictly secret.

The tradition of the Maestri Vetrai has been handed down from father to child and transcribed into secret books till today. These secret techniques were of such great importance as to make the difference between the glass produced in Venice and that of other European glass centres.

In 1291, to avoid "fire-hazards", a Serenissima's ordinance decreed that every glass-factory had to be moved to the neighbouring island of Murano. Here, the ancient Roman and Byzantine techniques and the innovations in forms and colours have been blended to create a mysterious and charming whol.

In 1295 another strict "capitulary" was issued: in it the emigration of Venetian glass makers abroad was forbidden.

Everything made of Murano glass - from the murrine to the filigrees, from the chandeliers to the chalices or to the mirrors - is the result of work, imagination, discoveries and inventions bound together with a continuous thread which goes from the Middle-Age to the Renaissance, right up to us.

Growing inside this artistic and privileged atmosphere, the Mazzega srl became one of the preminent factory since 1920.

The Mazzega srl has been working with glass for a long time and employs the best Venice Glass Masters. Many of the presented glassworks are handmade and unique.

The show rooms of the Company exibit a very large choice of all tipycal Venetian glass products. Special projects and shipments all over the world is what have given to Mazzega srl a world-wide reputation.
